5 MPH by Badgerdawg (GCWXY5) -
August 19, 2006 by Mr. & Mrs. Wisearse
For what it's worth this one just made it on "Our Favorites" bookmark list. What a blast.
In our trusty kayak "Jennifer" we paddled our heinies all the way over from "Tunnel of Love," a good half mile one way. Now we're no expert kayakers (far from it!), so we were a bit tired getting out to GZ. However, it couldn't have been more fun of a trip out to it. It was the perfect day to be on the water: bright blue skies, temperatures in the 70s and a slight, cooling breeze coming off the lake. Caching nirvana, in fact.

Well, almost nirvana, a satori moment, maybe? Why? Because we almost got run over, TWICE, by the bloody "Sierra Belle" paddlewheel boat! Argh, damn tourists. We had to sharply change tack while the so-called "Belle" came both in and out of the Bay. Sassafrassin' rassin' boat.... At least riding her wake in a tiny kayak was fun, weeeeee!

Our other near-miss disaster was when, about half way out to the cache we got pulled over by the fuzz. Yep, they can smell Mr. Wisearse a mile away. Actually, the guy was incredibly nice. He pulled up right next to us (again, wake time, weeeeeee) and asked to see our "lake permit." "Erm, what's that?" we asked. He told us EVERYONE on the lake had to have a permit. "Erm, officer, Mr. Lake Patrol person, this is our first time on Big Bear Lake, and we had NO clue we needed a permit. We didn't even see any signs in the lot from where we launched." He said, "Yep, everyone on the lake's gotta pay. Do you have your wallets on you?" "Crap," we said, "they're back in the car. If we can just go a bit further to the ______, we'll gladly turn around and get our wallets." The guy was so cool, he said sure and took off. A while later, as we were JUST approaching GZ, he came up to us again and said there was an emergency (stranded boat) on the lake, and he'd meet us back at the launch site when we were done.

Well, to make a long story short ("too late!"), we found the awesome hide, paddled our butts back into shore (against the waves, which was much more tiring, heh), and waited for the lake patrolman for a good 20-30 mins. He stood us up! After talking to some locals, we decided to drive a bit west and then north up along the lake to where we could buy a permit. We felt bad and wanted to be sure we were good with the Lake Patrol. We went inside and found that a day (maybe two?) permit only cost $13, and the fine for NOT having one was $400! Holy cow! Man, we didn't know just how cool that patrolman was! Well we had our wallets out this time and were ready to pay the $13 after the fact, but get this: the VERY kind woman at the station said, "No problem, don't worry about it this time, just be sure to get a permit next time." Man, how cool are these mountain people?!

Badgerdawg, this cache is one we'll not soon forget. We had an incredibly fun time, and we thank you. Next time we see you, the beers are on us.

TNLNSL.

TFToutstandingC,
Mr. & Mrs. Wisearse.
